INTRODUCTION
About the Product
WidgetBox is an original B2C application designed for end users to easily purchase and use a variety of fashionable widgets in their daily activities. Developed specifically for the iOS operating system, this app is optimized for use on mobile devices and provides subscription monetization.
Responsibility
My role at WidgetBox involved spearheading the design initiatives within the development team, focusing on enhancing the product's user experience. My responsibilities encompassed various facets:
-
Enhancing the current flow and user interface of the product.
-
Conducting thorough research on widgets and product functionalities to inform editorial decisions.
-
Crafting additional interface content to enrich user engagement.
Simultaneously, I engaged in research and business analysis to anticipate future design needs for the platform. This work entailed close collaboration with a diverse team, including a product manager, two developers, a data analyst, and a software tester.
GOALS
Refine the app
Competitors Gap
Our app competes with established rivals, known for rich content and high revenue. The aim is to narrow the gaps, meet market standards, and add value for users.
More Content
The application was acquired with minimal content, prompting us to establish objectives for condensing its features and content. Our goal is to enhance the application's value by providing users with a comprehensive and meaningful experience.
Improve UI/UX
This type of application demands an outstanding user experience, particularly for end users. A key objective has been the continual enhancement of the user experience.
Target Audience
Females (14-34)
Based on data gathered from our company's data department, nearly 40% of users engaging with this category of applications are predominantly female.
American personas
The app is designed for the American audience, as the demand for applications of this type predominantly lies within the USA market, which boasts a substantial user base and high levels of user engagement.
Gadgets Lovers
Based on data gathered from our company's data department, nearly 40% of users engaging with this category of applications are predominantly female.
Problems & Solutions
1. How to install widgets
Joining WidgetBox I focused on a key concern: the low return rate of users who download widgets. This indicated a potential hurdle in users' familiarity with the widget installation process.
Solution
Delving into user behavior, I identified a common difficulty: users struggled to simultaneously follow a tutorial while installing the widget. Recognizing this bottleneck, I initiated an A/B test to evaluate two installation approaches. The first approach involved a step-by-step text and image guide, while the second offered a video tutorial. Following the test, a significant majority of users successfully installed the widgets using the video tutorial, demonstrating a clear preference for this method and showing promising engagement with the product post-installation.
2. Finding the added value
WidgetBox stands among a plethora of lifestyle apps saturating the market, where competition thrives vigorously. The challenge at hand? To revolutionize Widget Box. Upon delving into competitor analysis, it dawned on me that it fell upon my shoulders to inject fresh value into the interface, setting it apart from the crowd.
Solution
The unveiling of IOS17 presented the opportune moment to elevate the widget games. Thus, the introduction of interactive widgets with a playful dimension became paramount. Think Tic Tac Toe, Simon Says, Pop It, and more—a delightful fusion of utility and entertainment.
The result? A notable surge in downloads ensued, marking a substantial 2.5% uptick in product adoption amidst our user base.
ADVANTAGES
Added Values
1.
IOS 17
Before the debut of the IOS17 operating system, Apple had restricted the creation of interactive widgets. Upon its release in February 2023, we became trailblazers by uploading a version featuring interactive widgets, leading to a substantial boost in the application's profits.
2.
Focusing on gaming widgets
Following the emergence of the new operating system, we identified significant potential in crafting and developing game widgets. We aimed to establish distinctiveness and provide added value compared to existing competitors. We endeavored to create various types of games that not only enriched user experiences but also adhered to a highly specific niche unexplored by our competitors.
3.
Synergy with FireArc business
The search applet resulted from the need to align the company's core activity with its product offering. While we did see a modest increase in search volume, unfortunately, this alone did not lead to significant product growth. However, I recognized a business potential for the company that was worth trying.
Despite its lack of innovation, the search widget integrates seamlessly with the core of FireArc, ensuring positive synergies.
Adding commercial monetization
Dilema
We faced a considerable challenge regarding the revenue generated through advertisements within the application. Many competitors, as reported by competitors, successfully generated substantial profits by incorporating ads into the interface. However, at Widgetbox, our goal was to prioritize delivering a seamless and uninterrupted user experience, aiming to minimize abandonment rates while still providing value.
Measure
Success
-
As a team, one of our established metrics is the conversion rate from free users to paying users. While I don't have the precise numbers at hand, it's a key focus area.
-
Another metric to consider is the count of users who've provided credit card details, initiated a trial period, and subsequently upgraded their subscriptions.

USER INTERFACE
WidgetBox
User Interface
The Challenge:
Upon analysing the analytics data, it became apparent that a significant portion of users who land on the interface's main page exhibit low engagement levels. Many either quickly abandon the platform or fail to return for subsequent usage.
The Solution:
To address this challenge, a revitalisation of the home page is proposed, aiming to enhance engagement and foster sustained interest. The revamped home page will showcase the latest widgets, today's featured widget, new backgrounds, and more.
the page presenting users with a visually appealing and captivating feed designed to prolong their interaction with the interface.
Success will be gauged by metrics such as increased user retention rates and extended time spent on the home page following these updates.

ADDED VALUE
Search Widget
We've (me and PM) devised a plan to align with FireArc's core business: introducing the "Search Widget." This tool enables users to conduct searches directly, boosting engagement and revenue.

Essentially, this outlines the sequence of steps a user follows leading up to initiating a search. It's important to emphasize that the installation process for the widget remains consistent across all widgets.
